Local Artist....Art Lesson....The Funky Monkey...

We were so lucky today to have local artist Wanda Mumm come into the classroom to teach an art lesson.  She previously came in to teach about space, shape, and line.  Today she came in to use those concepts while teaching the students how to draw Funky Monkey and face drawing.  The kids had an awesome time and their drawings came out terrific.

Using Our Senses for Fall Writing

We have been working on our T-charts using our 5 senses to describe fall.  Once we finished our t- charts Mrs. Pluid has been coming in to work with us on developing our fall paragraphs.  They have turned out beautiful!

                                                         Working on an amazing paragraph....

Planting Tulips

The students had a great time planting tulips with Mrs. Goheen.  We can't wait to watch them grow.  I guess we have a little while to wait.  It will be worth the wait!

                                                                 Emperor Red Tulips!

Oh the Hum of Reading.....

I think that the best class sound is the hum of children reading to themselves or to each other.  We had a wonderful afternoon where we had the opportunity to just sit and read for awhile.  Some read to themselves, some to each other.  I love the look of children when they are just LOST in a book.  What an awesome day!

Lost in a book....

Partner reading....

Discussing a book....

Enjoying sitting by friends and reading.....

We had an awesome Bat Day!  We studied Mega bats and Micro bats.  We even saw real examples of bats that were encased in glass.  We compared the wingspan to ordinary objects and completed an art project.  We LOVE bats!

WOW! Where has summer gone!

I've had a BUSY summer!  I've had the opportunity to visit my family in California for 3 weeks this summer.  This is not something I usually get to do.  Spent a lot of time with my brother which is rare.  Had such an awesome summer.  Even though I did have a true vacation I still put in my typical teacher hours this summer.  My classroom is pretty much set and I'm on to the next phase, PLANNING.  This is exciting for me.  I love when the air turns cold in the mornings and I feel Fall coming....gets me in the mood to plan for all those new kiddos coming in.  I'm very excited about this new school year...We are going to have a terrific time!

Summer Goals

I'm starting this a bit late in the summer but I've got to start focusing and get some things organized for our next school year.  Here are my goals.....
1. Label all my classroom library books according to AR
2. Create my own lesson plan book with big areas to write down details to each lesson
3. Create a fun reading curriculum
4. Reorganize my room geared for two reading groups at a time.
5. I should have more goals but this is it for now.....

End Of Our Year

So it's the end of our year.  It's been a great year.  I haven't kept up the sight due to being out for 6 weeks from surgery then hitting the ground running once I came back.  I will miss this bunch of kids.  They've been a great group.  They are fun, smart, and amazing.  I would be so lucky to have another group like this one.  Keep coming back this summer to my blog to look for changes in our classroom.  I always work during the summer to change things up a bit each year.  Have a fun, safe, and beautiful summer.  KIDS....make sure you come back in next school year to say hello and give a quick hug.  Love you guys!

President's Day

After reading about Washington and Lincoln and watching a couple videos about their lives to end our unit we created our Washington Portrait art.

Working on Our Reading Stamina

All year long we've been working on our reading stamina to become more independent readers.  Our reading class has made a time of 25 minutes of independent reading.  They have practiced reading independently every Wednesday.  We have graphed their minutes of hard work.  They currently read about 25 minutes without talking or getting out of their special spot. They are fully engaged at the time.  As the students read, Mrs. Tincher and I walk around the room and sit in with one student at a time.  When we sit next to them that is their cue to start reading out loud so we can listen in.  This gives us a chance to listen in on their reading and we follow through with comprehension questions before we move on to the next student.  It also gives us a chance to take note on any difficulty the student is having and we can teach to that student accordingly.  Most students look forward to our silent reading Wednesdays.  I know I do.

Aliens and Dinosaurs! OH MY!

We just finished up our space unit, so we had a creative writing day where we created our alien friend.  After we wrote about our friend we created his/her/it's look!  Once we finished up our creative writing project we went right into dinosaurs.  We discussed how there is herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores.  We also discussed features of four famous dinosaurs such as the T-Rex and the Triceratops.  After we finished up this unit we discussed fossils and the job of Paleontologists.  We then got to do a little digging ourselves.  LOOK WHAT WE FOUND!
